The Global report on suicides is being released today by WHO. The highlight of the report is a finding that in every 40 seconds a suicide occurs in the world. The number of suicides in each year is over 8,00000, says the report. The concern over the report is that not many countries still have national suicide prevention strategies. Currently only 28 countries have taken this issue seriously and taking action to prevent suicides. Evidences prove that suicides are preventable to certain extent. There are many organisations who work in this direction. Though the rate of suicides are higher in the low and middle income countries, studies say that suicides occur in almost all countries. What we look forward at this juncture, is a commitment by government and agencies to co ordinate a plan of action for prevention of suicides.

Scientists at the University of Warwick have found that Methylglyoxal, a byproduct of glucose metabolism inside the human body, can destroy HDL cholesterol. HDL cholesterol, also known as good cholesterol, removes the excess level of bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) from the body. The high level of bad cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for heart disease. HDL cholesterol destroyed by Methylglyoxal get cleared off rapidly, reducing its concentration in the plasma, and thus could increase up to 10% risk of heart disease. There is no drug discovered as such, that can could prevent the reduction of HDL cholesterol in the blood.Commenting on this research work, Dr Rabbani said: By understanding the activity of Methylglyoxal on HDL, we can now redirect our focus on developing new drugs like, protein called glyoxalase 1, that can reduce the Methylglyoxal in the blood.

In a survey taken, mothers who were most attentive to their infants’ babbling reported their children said more words and showed more gestures at age 15 months. On the other hand, infants whose mothers did not try as much to understand them did not show the same rate of growth in their language and communication skills. An infant's babbling may not be understandable, but listening and responding will let their infants know they can communicate which accelerate their child’s vocals and language learning.
