The reason for one of every four deaths in US is cancer, says the 2014 report of American Cancer Society. Cancer has become the second most common disease for death in US.As per the report,it is estimated that there will be 1,665,540 new cancer cases diagnosed and 585,720 cancer deaths in the US in 2014.Last day, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a European Code against cancer. The Code emphasizes the importance of avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and excessive sun exposure as well as the benefits of maintaining a healthy body weight and being physically active. It also recommends participation in organized programmes for bowel, breast, and cervical cancer screening. In the European Union, there are currently an estimated 2.66 million new cancer cases and 1.28 million cancer-related deaths per year. Moreover, due to the effects of population growth and ageing, the burden of cancer in Europe is projected to increase in the coming years and decades.
Knowledge about the causes of cancer, and interventions to prevent and manage the disease is extensive. Cancer can be reduced and controlled by implementing evidence-based strategies for cancer prevention, early detection of cancer and management of patients with cancer. Many cancers have a high chance of cure if detected early and treated adequately, says the WHO guide line. The alert against cancer should not be confined to regions or nations. Being a global threat the whole world should take up the war against this deadly disease.

Addiction to Sugary Foods

by Anagha Mahesh

Cookies, cakes, candies, cone high with ice creams, are so tempting that we feel like consuming them What exactly matters that makes sugary food so hard to resist?Sugar describes a class of molecules called carbohydrates. If you check and go through the list of things you buy on monthly basis there are abundance of sugar content in many of the foods we buy such as glucose, sucrose, fructose, lactose, starch and dextrose found in raw sugar, honey, fruit juices, etc.Sugar is not only found or added into sweets, confectioneries and deserts but also added to tomato sauce, yogurt and dried fruits. What exactly happens when you touch a little bit of sugar through tongue? It activates the sweet taste receptors present in on your tongue. These receptors then send a signal upto the brain and from there it goes to other main parts of the brain such as cerebral cortex, thus makes us feel like having more of sugary products.

NOW, PAINLESS INJECTION IS ALMOST A REALITY

by Bose R C

Scientists after very long research have almost succeeded in finding out a new technique of injecting flu shots, vaccines and other medications, without pain. Researchers led by Mi-ae Park et al, at Seoul National University in South Korea, claims that, this new device uses an erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG, laser), to produce a small stream, accurate dose of liquid drug. It uses laser beam technique at lower energy to inject the drug painlessly. The jet of liquid medicine is slightly thicker than a human hair and ejects out at the speed of 100ft/ second. The pressure applied by the jet is slightly higher than the skin tensile strength. The microjet of liquid drug penetrates into the skin without splashing back. Although various studies were done using Piston-like microjet injectors, but it was very difficult to control the strength of the jet and dose of the drug. The latest laser-driven microjet injector can accurately control the depth that the drug has to penetrate and the dose of the medications.Initially the study was conducted on guinea pigs. The drug was injected up to few millimeters beneath the skin without any damage to the tissue. Now, scientists are working to develop a very low-cost replaceable micro-injectors for clinical use and soon will be used in the settings like mass vaccination of children.
