CHRONOTHERAPY: A STEP TOWARDS PERSONALIZED TREATMENT FOR CANCER.

by Bose R C

Cancer chronotherapy is about providing anti-cancer treatment at an optimal time. Because the body is governed by precise biological rhythms,  that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle. This can double the efficacy of anti-cancer drugs and can decrease their toxicity up to five-times with regards to the administration of the drug  at exact time within a 24 hour cycle. The variations in biorhythms that exist between persons, is yet to be considered. This study was published in the journal Cancer Research. The study was conducted in mice by international research faculties from  nserm, CNRS and Universit Paris-Sud.This study was based on the discovery made by  Francis Lévi, about 20 years back, seeks to improve the efficacy of chemotherapy treatments. To achieve this, they have measured 27 gene expression in the liver and colon over 24 hours and then analyzed it. Francis Lévi found that, the body's metabolism follows a 24 hour cycle, influenced by the circadian rhythm with precise times of the day or night, this made the toxic anti-cancer drug more toxic to cancer cells and less aggressive to healthy cells. Now the scientists are aiming to validate other chemotherapeutic drugs using a similar model. In addition to gene expression, they are also aiming to measure physiological parameters that are influenced by the biological clock that could help predict the optimal time of treatment. This work may be possible to enhance the efficacy and tolerance of anti-cancer drug and also improve the quality of life of patients, considerably.
